Camera pans vertically from top to bottom over the bow of the USS Iowa (BB-61) as she is ready for launching at the Brooklyn Navy yard in New York City, on August 22, 1942. Sponsor of the ship, Ilo Browne Wallace, wife of Vice President Henry A. Wallace, Christens the Iowa by breaking a bottle of champagne over her bow, and the ship moves down the ways toward the East River. The Williamsburg Bridge is seen dimly in the background, as the Iowa plunges into the water. Camera focuses, next, on the USS New Jersey (BB-62) ready for launching at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on December 7, 1942. Men knock supports from below the New Jersey, in preparation for her launching. Next, she is seen moving down the ways. Closeups of some shipyard workers smiling as the New Jersey is launched. Former President Harry S. Truman and his wife Bess, taking seats at the convention. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, taking her seat. Democratic Party National Chairman, Paul M. Butler standing behind and below the podium as convention prepares to get underway. The amphitheater is filled with seated delegates, as they are called to order. Delegates standing and applauding, following the keynote speech of Frank G. Clement, Governor of Tennessee, who touches the Tennessee delegate identification pole as it is thrust toward him. Delegates waving poles displaying their respective State names.

St. Helens has a violent eruption, which is seen on film, as the field workers run to escape. Narrator states the cloud reached nearly 14 miles into the sky. The cloud and internal bolts of lightning are seen. View of daylight obscured in Eastern Washington. Policeman wearing a face mask, stops a car from proceeding eastward. A helicopter of the 304th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron depart their Portland Air Base, to search for Geologist David Johnson, who was manning a scientific lookout above Cold Water Creek.
