President Franklin D. Roosevelt addresses the U.S. Congress in his "Four Freedoms" speech during the State of the Union address on January 6, 1941, in Washington DC, United States. During his address, various war production worker and war materiel manufacturing images are also shown (before the entry of America into World War 2, but during lend-lease production): Tanks, airplanes and flying boat aircraft are shown. Workers at war production factories making artillery shells and munitions. Scenes at a manufacturing plant building bomber aircraft warplanes during World War 2. A scientific exhibition at the United States' pavilion at West Berlin's central exhibition site. People lined up at the entrance to USA exhibit. Exterior view of the U.S. Pavilion. U.S. flag flies at the building and signs reading: "United States" and "ERF" are displayed above the building. Signs in the pavilion read: 'ATOM' and 'George C. Marshall - Haus'. People assembled to watch the exhibition. People lined up on stairs. U.S. representatives demonstrate how a nuclear fission assembly works, with simulated fuel and control rods and an instrument for reading radiation levels. A technician demonstrates how radioactive materials can be handled remotely, in a laboratory, using a robotic machine to manipulate delicate glass funnels and bottles. An inflatable laboratory suit is demonstrated, that one could crawl out to and work in while in a toxic environment.

The world struggle for oil is depicted. Use of components of oil in homes and in railroads in the United States is shown. A dramatization shows the effect of a kerosene lamp on social life. A woman seated in a chair near a table in a room. A kerosene lamp in a corner. A man opens the door of the room and walks in. The woman gets up and welcomes the man. They both walk to a seat and sit down. Another woman enters the room. The man stands to greet her. She increases the light of the lamp and then leaves the room. The man decreases the light of the lamp. The man and the woman talk. The 1893 replica of the 1831 DeWitt Clinton steam locomotive is shown in operation with its three carriage train, in New York City. The DeWitt Clinton was the first railroad locomotive to operate on the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad in New York. The reproduction seen here was built in 1893 by the New York Central Railroad for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This footage was shot on July 17, 1921 when the DeWitt Clinton train was preparing for a trip to another exposition in Chicago. On this day it ran several times from 96th to 116th streets in New York City. New York Central employees are seen on the drain, dressed as passengers would have been in 1831. This replica was later displayed at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, and is is now on display at The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn Michigan. It was acquired by Henry Ford in 1934, in an agreement with the New York Central that it would continue to travel to events on occasion.

Much later, as President of the NAACP chapter on campus of Michigan State University, he is seen handing out pamphlets to other students. Views of students congregating on the grounds of the university. One girl holds a poster reading "Give, NAACP Fund Drive." Professor David Gottlieb introduces Ernest Green who steps to a classroom podium to speak to Michigan State students in a lecture room. Green carrying books is seen entering and sitting down in the Michigan State library. In another scene, he enters sociological data into Hollerith punch cards for processing by computer. He walks in the university computer room where tape decks are seen spinning and computer operators are at work. One of the tapes mounted on a drive is labeled: "Ernest Green, Aspirations." Results from his work are seen coming out of a line printer. Green sits in a library and opens the 1960 yearbook of Central High School containing his and Carlotta Walls 'entries. View of Carlotta, in dorm at Denver University, Colorado, where she is a student. Gloria Ray is seen at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she is a senior majoring in chemistry. Terrence Roberts is seen at the City College of Los Angeles, where he is studying Business Administration. Melba Pattillo, who left college to marry, is seen in two views.Scene shifts back to Central High and Jefferson Thomas, looking at the athletic trophies on display. He (who is narrating this film) states that he will take an exam in Spring to become a Certified Public Accountant. He walks down steps of Central High and camera pans over neighborhood to the State Capitol dome in distance.
