USAF C-119 aircraft and crews practice space capsule recovery in the Discoverer program

Several C-119J aircraft of the U.S. Air Force 6593rd Test Squadron (Special) take off in succession from Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, on missions to develop and test capability to snag space capsules parachuting to earth from satellites in orbit. (Note: The mission of the 6593rd Test Squadron was to recover film capsules returning to earth from orbiting Corona photoreconnaissance satellites, during the 1960s. Their JC-119s had "beavertail" doors that could be opened in flight [unlike clamshell doors that had to be left behind for open-door operations in other C-119s]. All American Engineering Company installed the special recovery equipment in the squadron's aircraft. The 6593rd Squadron accomplished the first successful mid-air recovery of an object from an orbiting satellite, on 19 August 1960, when they captured a film capsule released in the Corona Discoverer 14 Satellite mission.)

C-119J aircraft of USAF 6593rd Test Squadron take off from Hickam AFB

Left engine of a C-119J aircraft starts. Several C-119J aircraft of the U.S. Air Force 6593rd Test Squadron (Special) taxi out for takeoff at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. They are on missions for Project Discoverer, to practice snagging space capsules as they parachute to earth from satellites in orbit. As they taxi, C-54 and C-124 aircraft can be seen in the far background. A Pan American Boeing 377 Stratocruiser passenger airplane can be seen on a nearby taxiway. The first C-119J stops on the runway, and then proceeds to take off. Several more follow in succession.

A C-119J taxiing. A hangar with two C-124 aircraft and a T-33 jet trainer seen in the background. The taxiing C-119J is followed by another. The first reaches the active runway and takes off. Suddenly, a person's hand covers the camera lense, blocking out all other images. Next we see a glimpse of most, or all, of the C-119J aircraft of the 6593rd Test Squadron parked on a ramp.
