U.S. 96th Aero Squadron at the First Air Depot in Colombey-les-Belles, France during World War 1. A gunnerchecking out the Scarff ring mounting of his Lewis machine gun in the rear cockpit of a De Havilland DH-4 bomber aircraft. His pilot approaches the aircraft and gets in the cockpit. The pilot and the gunner both shake hands with an American officer who reaches up to them from the ground. Then they settle down in their cockpits for engine start. Three ground crewmen with hands linked together, pull the propeller through several times before they manage to start the aircraft engine. They move away from the aircraft as the engine fires. They pull chocks from in front of the wheels and the aircraft taxis onto the airfield. The airplane tail displays the French blue-white-red vertical paint stripe scheme.

U.S. 96th Aero Squadron at First Air Depot in Colombey-les-Belles, France during World War I. A De Havilland DH-4 bomber taxis on the airfield. A DH-4 seen in flight overhead, maneuvering to land. Next, it is seen parked on the grassy field. The pilot and gunner are both standing in their respective cockpits, facing each other and conversing, while the engine still runs intermittently as it shuts down. Scene shifts to Air Service personnel heading across the grass toward a completely inverted Salmson 2A2 reconnaissance airplane in the distance. Closeup of an American Sergeant, under the inverted airplane, examining the gunner's cockpit and area around it. The airframe seems to be relatively undamaged. It appears as it the aircraft nosed-over on landing. Another view shows a large group of curious American airmen standing around the aircraft. (Blue-white-red vertical paint stripes on their tails identify these as French aircraft.) Several Breguet 14 biplane bombers take off, one after the other, from the field. A motorcycle with sidecar and a loaded truck drive beneath planes taking off. A change of scene shows a gunner still in the rear cockpit of a De Havilland DH-4 bomber that has just nosed over. Its propeller is buried in the ground. Tricolor roundels on its wings (blue-white-red, from center outward) identify this as a French airplane.
