F-100 Super Sabre crashes and explodes in fire at the Edwards Air Force Base in California, United States.

Fatal accident at Air Force flight test center at the Edwards Air Force Base in California, United States. An F-100 Super Sabre jet fighter aircraft being flown from Palmdale California, by Lieutenant Barty Brooks, of the 1708th Ferrying Wing, is attempting an emergency landing at Edwards, after being unable to retract his landing gear. He rounds out high in a nose up attitude during final phase of approach, and decides to take it around to avoid a crash landing. He applies full power but it is not enough to allow him to reestablish normal controlled flight. Instead the aircraft staggers along, under full power and nose high attitude (so-called "sabre Dance").It appears to gain a few feet in altitude, but ends up falling off and striking its right wind on the ground and crashing in a huge fireball.
