Aircraft undergo various tests at the Wright Air Development Center of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Testing of magnesium burner attached to an aircraft flying at night for night photography. A static lightning test is done on a model of a F-84 Thunderjet aircraft, for the study of interference. A technician seated at an electron microscope instrument panel adjusts dials. Image of a highly magnified particle is shown. Two technicians work with an early computer (referred to as an"electronic brain" by the narrator) as they use it to solve calculations before an aircraft is built. Another technician is shown working on a computer instrument referred to as a "polynomial evaluator" by the narrator. A test subject in an "aero-medical" chamber is seen wearing flight clothing and oxygen mask. A technician seated at control outside chamber. Test subject in chamber and various instruments kept in side. Instrument records the altitude, pressure release valve punctured. Test shows pressurized quit inflating. A brake lining is tested an an aircraft tire, simulating a high stress, rapid stop. A human subject seated in an ejection seat experience an ejection seat test, rising rapidly upward on a twin rail system. Aerial view of air-to-air refueling of KC-97 Stratotanker and B-50 Superfortress aircraft. A pilot in cockpit as he maneuvers in for refueling. Refueling of B-50 from KC-97.
Activities at Wright Air Development Center, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Two burners under wing of B-47 Stratojet aircraft. Gun fire test on a container filled with hydraulic fluid. B-47 lands with drag parachute. Technician makes a part for aircraft C-97 Stratofreighter. A stenographer types notes. A woman takes out the printouts. Several view of various office workers. A project engineer works on a machine. A woman takes out the prints of graphs. Librarian checks out book for technician. A woman works on publications. Technicians seated at a desk and look at the project details. Various supplies kept in warehouse. A sign reads 'WADC Supply Shuttle Truck No 6'. A technician works on a fabricated machine. Instrumentation camera in operation. Theodolite camera track B-45 Tornado in flight. Technician checks the propeller. F-86 stationary. Divided frame in five sections shows F-86D Sabre, F-59 buzz camera, Matador missile launching,F-86D, Book entitled 'Nuclear Powered Aircraft' and Bell X-1 in center. Aerial view low-flying over facilites of the WADC in Ohio. A Wright Memorial. A title card reads "For us, This is Not the End."
Piasecki H-21 at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Piasecki H-21 helicopter hovers over runway.
Technicians look at remains of X-15-3 and its XLR-99 engine after explosion on test stand at Edwards Air Force Base. Various equipment kept on a ground. A cockpit of X-15. Ladder on either side of X-15. Technicians look at XLR-99 engine which looks completely destroyed. Front part of X-15 fuselage still intact.
X-15 first powered flight on Thursday, 17 September, 1959. (X-15 No. 2, tail number: 56-6671 with LR-11 engines. Scott Crossfield flew this mission at mach 2.11 and altitude 52,341 feet.) Scenes of several other X-15 powered flights are also shown. View of the water tower at Edwards Air Force Base, california. Overhead, NASA NB-52A, No. 003 and an F-100D chase plane, are seen at high altitude, with contrails behind them. The X-15, cradled under the B-52's right wing, drops clear, starts its rocket engines and begins its first independent powered flight, climbing rapidly away from the B-52. NASA camera tracks it, appearing as a moving white dot against the sky. The next sequences show later powered flights. View of NASA B-52 and three chase planes leaving contrails overhead. X-15 drops, its engines are running and falls behind the B-52, before accelerating rapidly, passing to its right, and continuing upward. Another scene shows brief glimpse of NASA B-52 overhead (no contrails). In final scene, X-15 is seen moving rapidly, leaving a long contrail behind it. Cloud then obscures the image somewhat.
View of a North American X-15 landing on a Rogers dry lake bed runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The camera follows the X-15 as it approaches in nose-high attitude and shows ground contact of its main skids and of its nose gear as it is lowered. The camera continues tracking the X-15 along the runway until it comes to a stop.
