Washburn convinces them and is allowed to enter the village. Washburn visits other villages. He gives salt to a tribal boy and he licks the salt signifying bond of friendship. Washburn sit on a carpet laid out on the ground as tribal chiefs offer gifts to accept his friendship.

He rows across the lake in a boat and arrives at Bulape, capital of Bakubaland. He meets King Lukenga and seeks his consent to set up a mission station. After receiving the consent tribesmen start the construction of Mission Station under Dr Washburn's supervision. Dr Washburn and his wife sit under a tent and talk.
