The miners enter the shaft 600 feet down by riding a caged lift or elevator. Point of view shot from the elevator lift as it descends, showing the walls of the lift shaft and then arrival underground beside a rail system tunnel. At one point the car pauses when a switch man waving a a handheld light comes out to stop the train and allow miners to pass by over the tracks on foot, and to allow another train from an adjacent tunnel to pass in front at the switch.
