Views of The Great Atlantic Hurricane lashing at northeast United States areas (after having already hit the North Carolina Outer Banks), and views of the aftermath and early cleanup following the storm. Regions shown include Atlantic City, Long Island (where it came ashore as a category 3 hurricane on September 15, 1944), New York City suburbs, and parts of New England. High surf flooding boardwalks and coastal cities. Trees bent over and snapped in high winds. People walking with difficulty in the high winds. Streets of towns submerged in water. Coastal docks destroyed and large boats scattered high onto shore areas. Trees, poles, and wires downed over roads and homes. Entire homes moved off of their foundations and placed down the street. The "Great Atlantic Hurricane" was the first example of a named hurricane by the Miami Hurricane Warning Office, which later became the National Hurricane Center. The name was meant to reflect the hurricane's size and intensity.

Recovery of Marine wounded in Saipan during World War II. United States ships underway in the Pacific Ocean during the battle of Saipan. Naval guns aboard the ship bombard the coast. United States troops aboard transport ships. Landing crafts loaded with Marines move towards the shore. Troops land at the coast amidst heavy firing. Medical Company arrives at the beach and looks after the wounded Marines. Marines fire machine gun and tanks roll. Injured Marines on stretchers being carried away. Litter patients being placed into ambulance jeep and carried away. Medical officer examines the wounded and provides first aid to them. Litter patients being placed in a jeep and walking wounded being helped to get into the jeep. Jeep carries the injured Marines to Regimental aid station. The freighter SS Yorkmar, owned by the Bethlehem Steel Company, and operated by the Calmar Line, is aground on an open beach north of Grays Harbor, Washington State, United States. A ship's officer and some members of the crew are seen briefly,on the shore. A Coast Guard helicopter hovers over her stern while carrying a line out to the ship from the shore. Crew members are seen standing in the water near the Yorkmar,and pulling on a line from the ship to the shore. Others climb a rope ladder up the side of the Yorkmar. The crew remains with the ship awaiting tide to refloat her. (Note: The SS Yorkmar, seen here, should not be confused with a ship of the same name that was torpedoed in 1943. This ship was originally a Liberty Ship, launched in 1944, and named the "Walter Kidde." After the war, she was operated by Calmar SS Corporation of New York and renamed the "Yorkmar," in 1947.)
