Two American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) soldiers in a deep trench clean their rifles. Snow on the ground.The trench is lined with woven tree limbs and twigs, and even include "benches" for sitting. A third soldier appears with gas attack warning. The soldiers don their gas masks. Others appear wearing gas masks. All take firing positions in the trench, as gas drifts over them. A soldier without a mask stumbles into the trench. One of the soldiers places a gas mask over his face. Another goes down the trench and fetches medics who attend to the victim. American Expeditionary Forces soldiers show techniques for coping with gas attacks

Several soldiers of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) are seen moving through a trench, carrying supplies to their sector. Snow is on the ground all around the trench. Suddenly they stop and don their gas masks. The sit down in the trench as a gas cloud comes over them. Scene changes to a group of soldiers digging defenses at the base of a earthen berm. A lookout sentry standing above them sees a gas cloud headed their way and alerts everyone. All stop what they are doing, don their gas masks, and take up positions to better observe. Some remain behind the berm and other stand upon it. The next sequence illustrates the use of Ayrton fans to clear gas from a trench. Soldiers waving the fans move, one behind the other, low in a deep trench. In the next scene, drifting gas partially obscures a dugout entrance in a trench. A soldier, uses an Ayrton fan to dispel the gas. In the final scene, soldiers in gas masks are in firing positions in a trench. A gas cloud appears to have dissipated. One soldier removes his gas mask make sure it is safe, and then tells the others, who remove their masks and stow them away. (World War i; World War 1; WWI; WW1)

German pilots prepare to fly a mission in a Rumpler C.IV two-place biplane during World War I. German armorers stow small bombs in the rear cockpit, and mount a large one underneath the airplane. Scene shifts to pilot in cockpit as he taxis along an airfield. Skull and cross bones is painted on side of the airplane fuselage. A parabellum machine guns sits in the empty rear cockpit. Sequence shifts to aerial views of a city from a reconnaissance airplane, at 1000 meters altitude. Among things seen are a river and an impressive building (possibly a cathedral). Views of photographer taking pictures from the rear cockpit, while the airplane is in flight. Aerial views of the city of Verdun and of battles taking place in no-man's land. (indicated by smoke rising). At this point, a sequence shot by an intrepid German combat photographer, from the battle of the Somme,is inserted. It shows trenches subject to an intense British artillery barrage. The German troops are seen fleeing from their trenches and running to escape the bombardment. Some extremely heavy explosions occur on the German positions. (Note: a slate erroneously characterizes the running German soldiers as advancing.)
