Opening scene shows a contingent of Belgian soldiers carrying their rifles and packs as they walk in loose formation across a rutted frozen field during World War 1. Next, several are seen, briefly, firing their rifles from behind an earthen berm. A glimpse of the soldiers trying to get a fire going near a makeshift shelter. Brief view of the soldiers being issued towels and toiletries. Change of scene shows some French soldiers standing on a wooden pontoon bridge, bypassing the original bombed out one in the background. A team of horses pulls a wagon across the bridge. Next, a troop of mounted French cavalry are shown (from the rear) as they proceed toward the front, along a road, lined by trees.
