President Woodrow Wilson's "Pilgrimage of the Heart" visit to Carlisle, England, in 1918.
On the way to the Paris Peace conference, President and Mrs. Wilson visit Carlisle, England, on 29 December, 1918. Crowds gather at the main Market square in Carlisle, England, to welcome President Wilson on his “pilgrimage of the heart” visit to this birthplace of his mother. The weather is foggy and drizzling. The Crown & Mitre Hotel, where the President and First lady are staying, and where Wilson signed the freemen's roll, can be seen faintly across the square. A troop of horsemen lead an open horse-drawn carriage carrying the President, Carlisle Mayor Bertram Carr and another official. They step from the carriage in front of the Town Hall to await a second carriage carrying First Lady, Mrs.Edith Wilson. While waiting, Wilson doffs his hat and waves to the crowds attending in spite of the dreary weather. The second carriage arrives and Mrs.Wilson waves a large bouquet of flowers as she steps down from the carriage,followed by Lady Mayoress, Miss Eleanor Carr. The President, First Lady, and others then enter the Town Hall.
Dedication of memorial to lives lost on U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Tampa and Seneca, in 1918
U.S. Coast Guardsmen parade in dress whites, at pier in Gibralter harbor, and assemble in formation for ceremony to dedicate a memorial. The Coast Guard Ensign hangs over, and hides a memorial plaque on wall of building. Participants include British and American officers and British and American civilian officials, several dressed formally, with top hats. A number of ladies are seated for the event. After brief invocation by clergyman, A British military brass band plays, Coast guardsmen, with rifles, present arms, and the Coast Guard ensign is removed, unveiling the memorial plaque. The plaque honors those lost when the Cutter Tampa was torpedoed by an enemy submarine, in Bristol Channel, on September 26, 1918, with loss of all 115 souls on board. It also honors 11 officers and men of the Cutter Seneca, who volunteered, and were lost attempting to salvage the torpedoed British Steamer, Wellington, in the Bay of Biscay, September 17, 1918. The American flag is displayed above the new plaque, and Coast Guard officers place four wreaths at the base of the memorial. .

In various places, British military personnel are seen in formations along the route. At one point, President Wilson, accompanied by senior British officers, reviews a cadre of British troops drawn up in formation. Later, the carriage of the President and First Lady arrives at the Guildhall (71 Basinghall St, London EC2V 7HH, United Kingdom), where they step down from the carriage.
