American AEF soldiers fire a 240mm trench mortar in France, during World War I

Several American soldiers carry a 240mm trench mortar shell from a dugout, at a defensive position in France during World War 1. They deliver it to a mortar crew, standing by with their 240mm mortar. After loading the shell, the gun crew loads its gunpowder charge from the breech and makes adjustments to the mortar. They then raise its barrel to a near vertical position. After making a last minute adjustment, the gun crew members quickly leave the site and remotely fire the weapon with a lanyard. Next, an explosion is seen in the distance as the mortar shell strikes.
