1919 U.S. Army Motor Transport convoy overcomes difficulties crossing bridges in Pennsylvania

U.S. soldiers place planks on exit side of the old covered bridge (built 1818) on the Lincoln Highway, over the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, during the 1919 Motor Transport Corps convoy journey from Washington DC, to San Francisco. A truck of the convoy, then drives slowly over those planks easing it down from the bridge floor to the lower dirt road. At another crossing point, near Chambersburg, a soldier removes lower boards from a bridge covering to allow a tall army truck to exit. Meanwhile, another truckpasses without difficulty on an immediate adjacent lane of the bridge.

A huge crowd on streets of New York City cheering and celebrating victory over Germany in World War I after signing of the Armistice. A cemetery of U.S. soldiers died in World War I. Cross burning and views of hooded Klan members at a Ku Klux Klan (KKK) ceremony. Palmer Raid victims: Suspected leftists, left wing, and anarchists seen being led away in a group by police after their homes were raided and searched without search warrants, under program led by U.S. Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, during 1919 and 1920. Some arrestees being escorted by U.S. soldiers in uniform. Palmer Raid arrestees seen behind barbed wire fences where they were held without charges for three months and denied legal representation. Vigilante businessmen and town leaders enforcing 12 hour work days at Steel factories in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Gary Indiana. Vigilantes (deputized and armed by local authorities seen with rifles and shotguns marching down streets enforcing business demands and countering steel workers on strike. They approach a striking worker on the road side and seize a stick he is holding. Together with police they begin to beat back the protesting crowd of men. Someone fires a gun in the crowd and shooting starts. An injured or dead steel worker on the ground is lifted up by a man and carried away.

Japanese Kamikaze aircraft attacking U.S. Navy Task Force off Okinawa. They attack the Aircraft Carriers Yorktown, Saratoga, and Bunker Hill. The Saratoga is hit by 4 Kamikaze planes. 315 U.S. sailors and airmen killed or wounded. Crew struggles to control fires and damage and care for casualties.The attacks continue and the USS Bunker Hill is struck by 2 Kamikaze planes and is on fire with heavy smoke rising as crew tries desperately to save her. The Cruiser Wilkes-Barre comes alongside spraying fire hoses in attempt to aid the stricken Bunker Hill. The Wilkes-Barre passes respirators to firefighters aboard the Bunker Hill. Rescue boats pick up crewmen who were blown off the deck into the sea. 373 killed and 264 injured on the Bunker Hill.
