First Allied convoy reaches Kunming, China, over the Ledo Road, during World War II
U.S. military trucks, part of a convoy of 113 vehicles, led by Brigadier General Lewis Andrew Pick, are seen traversing the Ledo Road (aka the Stilwell Road) approaching their final destination of Kunming, China, on February 4, 1945, during World War 2. (They departed Ledo, India, on January 12, 1945, traveling a distance of 1,079 miles.) (Narrator gives distance as 1,044 miles.) View from an overflying airplane shows the long column of trucks on the road below. View from the ground, of the convoy reaching the city gates, where it halts as General Pick and his staff proceed through the gates to a speaker's platform set up in a covered pavilion displaying American and Chinese flags, and pictures of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. General Pick and staff are introduced by Chinese General J.L. Wong who, speaking in English, celebrates this first convoy over the Ledo Road, and points to a banner containing four Chinese characters that spell out "The Road to Victory." General Pick takes the podium, shakes hands with General Wong, and accepts the banner from him. Camera shows the area completely filled with Chinese troops, witnessing the ceremony, including many sitting atop a nearby roof. General Pick speaks briefly, accepting the banner on behalf of the convoy members. He then leaves accompanied by the Governor of Yunnan Province, China. Officers cut a ceremonial ribbon across the road at the West Gate of the city, and the convoy is led into the city by two Chinese soldiers on motorcycles. Chinese spectators line the way and celebrate with firecrackers and cheers, as General Pick passes, standing in a jeep, displaying the Amercan flag and with the Chinese "Road to Victory" banner in its back seat. views of the convoy trucks proceeding through the city. Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) forces enter town of Teng-Chung, Yunnan Province, China (WW2)
Nationalist Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) troops attacking Japanese-held Teng-Chung (also Tengchong or Tengchung), a city in Yunnan province, on the Burmese border, during World War II. A Chinese Captain, watches through binoculars, as his infantry leave trenches and advance toward a hilltop fortification. Shells burst near the summit and around the advancing troops, who carry poles and ladders. Upon reaching the outer walls they use the ladders to scale them and enter the fortification. Later, KMT soldiers are seen sheltering against buildings as the town is struck by Japanese shellfire. They run forward. A KMT soldier employs a flame thrower. They run past barricades and burning vehicles, toward a damaged building. Two riflemen take up prone positions, as the soldier with the flame thrower passes in front of them. The infantrymen crawl forward cautiously.
The Salween Campaign against Japanese forces in Yunnan Province, during World War II
The Nationalist Chinese Salween Campaign against Japanese forces in Western Yunnan Province, during World War 2. Kuomintang (KMT) Chinese Air Force airplanes drop bombs on Japanese positions in valley near Salween River. U.S.Army Air Forces C-47 aircraft of the Air Transport Command's India-China Wing, airdrop military supplies to elements of the KMT army. U.S. military advisors (plus two pet dogs) help the Chinese to retrieve the airdropped supplies. They load mortar tubes and munitions on the shoulders of Chinese soldiers, who are also seen fastening loads on the backs of mules. The Chinese troops transport the supplies up winding mountainous paths into a destroyed town.
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in presaged by a decade of Japanese military aggression in China (WW2)
Opening scene shows the famous image of American battleship USS Arizona as attacked by Japanese forces in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 in World War II. The ship is engulfed in black smoke, and listing. Change of scene to a waterfront in Japan during 1938, where numerous Japanese soldiers board troop ships bound for Manchuria, China. Next, are scenes of Japanese troops marching as they occupy Manchuria. Closeups of some Japanese soldiers. Scene shifts to a train moving on the South Manchurian railway, at a station showing a sign reading,"Chin Hsien." View of steam locomotive pulling a train away from the camera position. (Narrator states that a Japanese train, on the South Manchurian Railway, had been dynamited) This incident triggered a Japanese attack on Mukden, Manchuria. Japanese infantry are seen placing numerous bundles of reeds as a bridge across a wide, shallow, stream and proceeding to cross on their way to invade Mukden. Military supplies are carried on pack animals. In the air, overhead Japanese Mitsubishi G3M Type 96 land-based attack aircraft are seen flying in precision "V" formation. On the ground, Chinese civilians run for cover in the City of Mukden. (The date is September 18, 1931.) Glimpse of Chinese civilians looking at bombing victims on street of Mukden.
