The rites that solemnize the elevation of Giovanni Cardinal Montini to the Chair of St. Peter are carried out with all of the traditional pomp, dignity and splendor of the Church. Dignitaries from many countries are seated. From the Vatican Palace the procession moves through the Square to an altar erected on the steps of St. Peter's. The ceremonies are held outdoors. The Pope celebrates a Pontifical Mass and then is crowned with the triple tiara. He promises to carry on the work of Pope John XXIII.
