Forces of Governor William Scranton fight a rear-guard action to the end. On the eve of the convention, Civil Rights demonstrators mass in protest against Goldwater and are seen in a march of 40,000 people on the streets of San Francisco, toward City Hall. The marchers at the demonstration hear from Henry Cabot Lodge and other leaders. President Dwight D. Eisenhower arrives for the Convention. Republican Governor Mark O Hatfield of Oregon gives a preview of his keynote speech, which describes the party as one of faith in various American ideals.
