Laying of pipelines for transportation of oil to refineries in the United States. Workmen load pipelines aboard lighters to transport them to a work barge where they can be welded joint by joint. Welders weld the pipelines on the barge. A welded joint is cooled with water and given a protective coating of paint. A river clamp is bolted around each welded joint to add weight to the line and further reinforce the joint. The work barge moves ahead and another joint of pipe is welded to the end of the line.
