Coast Guard Icebreaker Northwind comes to the aid. Icebreaker Northwind comes to the aid of vessels that are stuck in ice. It rescues and tows the Sennet. Sailors capture an Antarctic Ross Seal and lift it aboard a ship in a cargo net. Northwind cuts free the strangled USS Mount Olympus and other Navy vessels from the ice, and the Supplyship Merrick (AKA-97) which has suffered ruptures and taken on water.

Admiral Byrd's plane lands on the Antarctic ice. He meets and greets the fellow officers. Expedition team is caught in heavy blizzard. Snow is cleared off aircraft, tents and equipment after the blizzard subsides. Admiral Byrd reviews his men and U.S. flag is raised.
