AEF Artillery tractor training in France during World War I

American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) engaged in Artillery tractor training (possibly at the Tractor School for Field Artillery at Le Blanc, France) during World War 1. Several model 75 Holt tractors, with covers and tiller wheels, are seen moving in single file across a training field in France during World War I. Each carries two soldiers plus a driver. An officer stands observing as they move past. Each driver stands at the controls. Next, a tractor, with only a driver on board, maneuvers as it tows a 155mm gun and caisson. Another one also towing a gun, is seen behind it. Scene shifts to a tractor climbing up a steep incline. At the top, its tiller wheel is high off the ground and it balances there until more forward movement allows it to fall to the ground. (World War I; World War 1; WWI; WW1)

Step-by-step views of American gun crew towing, setting up, and firing a 155mm gun in World War I

Soldiers of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) operating a Caterpillar-Holt model 75 tractor in World War 1. They display a large American flag, as they tow a French 155mm gun ( Canon de 155 Grande Puissance Filloux (GPF) mle.1917). They move along a dirt road and stop near some trees, where they are joined by other U.S. soldiers who begin preparing the gun for operation. Two soldiers pry a steel cover from the rear of the gun. It falls to the ground, where they pick it up by suspending it on a steel bar. One jacks up the carrier as several soldiers remove the limber from under the gun trails. Two teams of soldiers spread the trails of the gun. Next, two gunners are seen cranking controls to adjust azimuth and elevation of the gun. A gunner wipes clean a shell for the gun. One soldier holds the shell upright as another screws a fuse into the nose. Gun crew rams charge into breech of the gun with a ramrod and another secures the breech, as gunners make final adjustments to elevation. All step away, as one fires the gun with a lanyard. Then the crewmen rush back to ready the gun again. (World War I; World War 1; WWI; WW1)

U.S. troops prepare and tow a 155 mm gun in World War I

Soldiers of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) prepare to move a 155mm gun in World War 1. View of a dozen American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) soldiers working around a 155mm gun (Canon de 155 Grande Puissance Filloux (GPF) mle.1917). The breech has a cover over it. The soldiers jack up the gun to allow them to close the split trails. After closing them, they roll and secure the limber underneath the trails. Afterwards, they secure a steel housing over the rear of the gun. Next, they secure a tow bar from a Holt-caterpillar model 75 tractor to the gun carriage and tow the gun to its new location.
