The freighter SS Yorkmar, owned by the Bethlehem Steel Company, and operated by the Calmar Line, is aground on an open beach north of Grays Harbor, Washington State, United States. A ship's officer and some members of the crew are seen briefly,on the shore. A Coast Guard helicopter hovers over her stern while carrying a line out to the ship from the shore. Crew members are seen standing in the water near the Yorkmar,and pulling on a line from the ship to the shore. Others climb a rope ladder up the side of the Yorkmar. The crew remains with the ship awaiting tide to refloat her. (Note: The SS Yorkmar, seen here, should not be confused with a ship of the same name that was torpedoed in 1943. This ship was originally a Liberty Ship, launched in 1944, and named the "Walter Kidde." After the war, she was operated by Calmar SS Corporation of New York and renamed the "Yorkmar," in 1947.)
Britain's Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrives in United States. He arrives on the 'Queen Mary' ship in New York harbor. Officials and other dignitaries greet him at the Army base in Brooklyn. Then he boards the President's airplane "Independence" at Floyd Bennett field to go to Washington DC. U.S. President Truman greets him at Bolling Field. U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument both visible in background. Churchill addresses the people at the airfield and talks about the harmony and close bonds between the two countries. Truman comments briefly also with words of agreement.
Senator Lodge tosses General Eisenhower's hat into the GOP ring during a press conference in Washington, United States. The press conference is at Eisenhower headquarters. Girls with Eisenhower's badges and 'I like Eisenhower' written on their legs. The senator says that the General is a Republican and therefore his name will be entered in New Hampshire primary.
Riots and unrest in Egypt. The Marshall law follows in the area. The British stand fast to protect their rights to the Suez Canal. The Egyptians stand against the British troops. Dead body of an American nun. Destroyed vehicles on the street. Houses along the sides of street. King Farouk summons a new government to cope with riots and bloodshed.
French troops (French Far East Expeditionary Corps) attack the Vietminh Red troops in Vietnam, French Indochina. Soldiers fire artillery (M114 155 mm howitzer). Explosions far in the field. Cardinal Roncalli proclaimed Pope in Vatican City. People gather at St Peter's Square in large numbers to watch the ceremony. He adopts the name of John XXIII. Crowd greets their new Pope. Pope addresses the people from the balcony of Sistine Chapel.
