Flight achievements of 1933 - Wiley Post completing solo journey around the world and Roscoe Turner speed record coast-to-coast
American aviator Wiley Post returns to Floyd Bennett Field in New York after completing his solo flight around the world in a just under 8 days. People gather in a large number to welcome him. They gather around his aircraft. Scene shifts to streets of New York City where Wiley Post is honored with a ticker tape parade for his Around The World achievement. The aviator seated aboard a jeep passing by. People celebrate and greet him. He is bestowed with the Medal of Valor by New York City Mayor John P. O'Brien. Next segment shows plane of American aviator Roscoe Turner landing, after his record-setting flight from New York to Los Angeles in 10 hours and 5 minutes flying his Wedell-Williams Model 44 (WW-44) aircraft. A finance officer (Captain) is seen at 127th Replacement Battalion site in Washington Hall, Chorley, Lancashire, England, He is converting currencies for U.S. Army airmen returning to the United States. Numbers on the helmets of some enlisted men designate their location of stay in the U.S.A. during the leave period. A new high capacity steam truck demonstrated at Bluefield in West Virginia, USA. The manufacturer's name, ' THE SENTINEL WAGGON WORKS LTD, SHREWSBURY, ENGLAND ' written on the truck. The loaded truck moves uphill. Additional information on this truck: This is the Sentinel S4 steam waggon, Number 9095. Built 1933 by Sentinel Waggon Works, Shrewsbury, England and exported as a demonstration vehicle to the USA with a works driver. Within a short time the vehicle was involved in an accident and overturned, requiring it to be returned to the UK. Many of the salvageable parts, especially those used to convert it to left hand drive were then fitted to a 6 wheel waggon No 9142 which was sent as a replacement. This vehicle was later purchased by the Pocahontas Coal Company of New Bedford. After a very short working life it was displayed at the Long Island Motor Museum, and Steamtown before being reaptriated to the UK in 2003.
