Variety of events in World War I years. German merchant submarine Deutschland (a British blockade buster) in 1916 in the United States (then neutral), departing New London, Connecticut on November 21, 1916 headed back to Germany carrying silver bullion. The submarine had just completed repairs following a collision with the tugboat T.A. Scott Jr. when first attempting to leave New London on November 16, 1916. May 24, 1939. Minesweeper USS Falcon (AM-28) employs a diving bell to rescue survivors from the sunken submarine USS Squalus.

Several rescued crew members from the submarine are helped out of the diving bell and climb aboard the Falcon. (A total of 33 crew were saved in four descents of the diving bell). Scene shifts to 13 July 1939, when the first attempt is made to raise the Squalus. An officer officer manipulates valves to send compressed air down into the hull of the Squalus. Next, foam is generated in the water as the bow of the Squalus emerges clearly showing its number, 192. The submarine remains in that condition, with bow elevated and then sinks again. (Note: several more attempts were made in subsequent months to raise the Squalus, until, finally, on 13 September 1939, the boat was successfully raised and towed to the Portsmouth Navy Yard for repairs. The submarine was renamed USS Sailfish and recommissioned in May 1940.)

United States Service academies hold graduation ceremonies in the U.S. At West Point, Annapolis, U.S. Army cadets of academy and officers gather for graduation ceremony. Cadets come to an officer, shake hands and receive diplomas. At U.S. Naval Academy, naval cadets receive diplomas and celebrate. The cadets of U.S. Air Force Academy march and sit in chairs to attend the graduation ceremony. In New London, Connecticut U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson addresses graduates of the Coast Guard Academy and says that their war potential is far superior to that of Russia.
Igor Sikorsky, in Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 helicopter, sets new record for sustained flight,at Stratford, Connecticut

Sikorsky takes off in his VS-300 helicopter attempting to set a new world's endurance record for sustained flight. At one point during the flight, Robert Mackellar III, an employee, in white lab coat, holds up a sign reading "Worlds Record BROKEN, 1 hour 20 mts, as the helicopter continues to hover, breaking the record of 1 hour, 20 minutes and 40 seconds, set in 1937 by Heinrich Focke in Germany. Judges check their watches to confirm the airborne time of the helicopter. The Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 helicopter sets a new record of 1 hour and 32 minutes sustained flight.
