A sailor scrubs the ship deck. A sailor dressed as a pirate is taken away by the doctors. An officer shakes hands with the pirate. The ice-breaker USS Edisto (AG-89) was under the command of Commander E. C. Folger, USN. The ship was headed for Antartica, as part of the U.S. Navy Antarctic Development Project, a continuation of the 1947 "Operation High Jump."
