USS California was departing for Puget Sound Navy Yard for major reconstruction following her damage during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the prior December 7. The USS California underwent dry dock repairs at Pearl Harbor Drydock Number Two until June 7, 1942, and then was moved under her own power to a wharf at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard for reinstallation of guns in July before departing on October 10 for the Puget Sound Navy Yard.
