Crew of the U.S. B-17 "Memphis Belle" begin their 25th (final) mission from Bassingbourn airfield, England, during World War 2
Scenes regarding the U.S. 8th Air Force B-17 named Memphis Belle, the first American bomber and crew to complete twenty-five missions over enemy territory in Europe during World War Two. Views of the peaceful English countryside around the British Royal Air Force Bassingbourn airfield, home base of the U.S. 8th Air Force 91st Heavy Bombardment Group. B-17s parked all around on the airfield. Views of Bassingbourn Church, graveyard, horse-drawn wagon, fields of grain, and farm buildings. On the airfield, ground crews clean canopies, refuel aircraft, and perform maintenance on the B-17s. Bombs seen stacked in munitions dump. Airmen ride on bombs aboard trolleys pulled by tugs. One plays the harmonica. Arriving at B-17s, they begin inserting nose fuzes in bombs. Pilots, Navigators, and bombardiers attend morning mission briefing and learn that their target is Wilhelmshaven. Chaplain prays over several crew members. Bombs are loaded on the B-17s. Crew of the 324th Bomb Squadron B-17, "Memphis Belle," arrives at the aircraft aboard a jeep. Pilot, Captain Robert K. Morgan gives last minute briefing and the crew boards the aircraft for their 25th bombing mission. Their airplane has 24 bombs painted on its side (one for each mission). They start their engines.

One by one, 29 B-17 aircraft of the 91st Bomb Group (out of 36 launched) return from their bombing mission over Wilhelmshaven, Germany during World War 2. Many suffered battle damage and have wounded crew aboard. The B-17, "Dame Satan," is seen with large holes in it. The B-17, "Old Bill," is shot to pieces, with its nose missing. Lieutenant Colonel Stanley T. Wray waits in control tower as three more aircraft arrive, including the "Memphis Belle." Her crew members relax and smile as she lets down to land. Her pilot, Captain Morgan buzzes the airfield before landing to complete their 25th bombing mission. They are congratulated by well wishers on the ground. Their crew chief paints the 25th bomb on the "Memphis Belle" fuselage. Change of scene: Brigadier General Haywood S. Hansell, Jr. awards a Distinguished Flying Cross to each crew member. Change of scene: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, of England, visit the flight crew and ground crew of "Memphis Belle" and converse with them. Change of scene: Lieutenant General Jacob L. Devers, Commander of U.S. Army Forces in Europe, and Major General Ira Eaker, Commander of the 8th Air Force, visit and greet the crew. General Devers reads their orders to return to the United States and encourage Americans on the home front.

Shows the precautions to be taken in case of a gas attack and the first aid measures to be used after gas exposure during World War 2. Aircraft in flight. Bomb wreckage during World War II including scenes from blitz firebombed areas in Europe or England, and scenes from China under attack by Japanese. Civilians fleeing in China as a Japanese attack begins. Back in the U.S., view of a new tank rolling into final assembly at a factory, and bullets being manufactured and poured into large containers in a munitions or ammunition factory. Mix of actual World War 2 footage scenes outside the United States, and dramatized war scenes inside the U.S. Narrator speaks as a U.S. soldier writes a letter to his mother at home, in which he contrasts the hardships of war torn countries and peoples with the relative safety and lack of suffering of the U.S. population during World War 2. Opening scene shows typical American women riding in a bus. One woman, ostensibly the soldier's mother, climbs aboard a bus as another woman steps out of it. A woman visits a friend who says she had to give up her Red Cross work because it didn't leave her time to get her hair done each week. A group of women at a garden party bridge club. Narrator says one of them could not work at a USO canteen because it conflicted with her bridge party. A woman lounging in a garden chair, is claimed to avoid a war job because they are all boring and dirty. A maid serves some hard to obtain foods to two woman at lunch. The hostess accused of obtaining them on the black market. The scene shifts to the letter writing son serving with the army in Europe. He relates taking a village recently, and the film shows residents cheering as the American soldiers occupy it. Fire fighters direct streams of water on burning wrecked buildings. Refugees fleeing their homes. Several nuns helping some as they evacuate. shells striking as refugees travel. Populations fleeing and refugee citizens leaving as invading forces come, in Russia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, France and France. View of people running for shelter in China. At this point, the film shows the chaos in those countries superimposed on America, where fires are being fought, and ambulances respond to help injured. A woman picks up her child as she and others run, looking skyward with dread. Air raid sirens sound in the background. A British soldier looks over a scene where Asian people are evacuating from war torn homes. A group of despairing European people. The film creates an imaginary image of and ordinary American woman digging through the rubble of her destroyed home. American women lined up, in front of bomb damaged buildings, to receive one egg a month. Other American civilians lined up to receive a ration of potatoes. Women in England are seen shoveling rubble from the remains of their homes after a blitz bombing by the German Luftwaffe. In Russia many women are seen digging and performing manual labor which the narrator says is labor forced by invading forces (possible slave labor forced by Nazi German forces). Women in Greece clearing rubble. Again, film creates imaginary view of Americans clearing rubble from their destroyed houses and evacuating en masse.
