Winter, 1943, testing at German Air Force Test Center, Peenemunde-West, Germany. Acceleration test of Argus engine for V-1. Test vehicle with Argus jet engine is readied on launch rail and men stand behind it. Snow is falling. A man stands on snow covered ground and directs. The Argus jet engine ignites and vehicle accelerates, leaving track to crash into ice and snow covered water. Views of the Rheinmetal-Borsig solid propellant rocket sled catapult, for V-1, on a rail.
Opening slate mentions speed and pressures generated in the test launch of A4 V2 rocket. The rocket launches and appears to be successful, moving up and out of sight. However, some white smoke descends and lingers in the atmosphere afterwards. The next slate states that the causes of the malfunctions have been identified and corrected. It is followed by a slate showing date of 3 October, 1942, and another about last instructions before the 3rd launch. German rocket scientist, Konrad Dannenberg, is seen discussing matters with several German officers at the test site. (Dannenberg is in the center of the group. Second from left is possibly Wernher von Braun. Second from right is possibly General Walter Dornberger.) The next slate reads: 1558 hours (3:58 PM) followed by one reading: Fire free. A German officer is seen speaking those words into a microphone. Camera shows a technicians hand as he sets firing switches on a control panel. ;Closeup of V2 rocket engine firing up. The rocket ascends successfully and disappears from sight. (Note: The footage at the end of clip showing the successful Oct 3 flight of A-4 V2 rocket was reportedly part of a film shown to Hitler at his Wolfe's Lair in 1943.) (World War II period).
Peenemunde Rocket Development Center in Peenemünde, Usedom, Nazi Germany. A V-2 rocket erected on a platform at Prüfstand VII (Test Stand 7). The rocket is prepared to launch. Later soldiers and scientists examine explosion site in middle of P-7. They examine wreckage of rocket. Parts of rocket dispersed on ground. Smoke arises from ground. Personnel discussing failure of rocket. Prominent at end of clip is Wernher von Braun seen smoking and gesturing to cameraman. (World War II period).
In response to secret orders, tests are performed at Air Force Peenemunde-West Testing Center. German technicians test use of rail for launching V-1 rockets ("buzz bombs"). Mechanic opens cover and pours hydraulic fluid into reservoir using funnel.V-1 ready for launch on the launch rail. Worker sprays water on the land near the launch pad. V-1 missile launches and flies short distance to splash into water. Cameraman records the missile launch test. Technician works on the launch rail and fits a pipe to it. (World War II period).
Responding to secret orders, The German Air Force Test Center at Peenemunde-West, tests mechanisms for launching the Fi 103 Fieseler (V-1 ) jet-powered flying bomb ("Buzz Bomb"). Plan calls for test of drive train rail with powder propellant rocket sled catapult having final speed of 100 meters per second. View of barren snow-covered land, test shack. and launch rail. View of test sled. Caption refers to test of Rheinmetal-Borsig catapult. Dummy V-1 missile is launched on an inclined plane. Missile plunges into water with a splash. (World War II period).
