(The engine emerged from the NERVA program -- Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Applications -- a combined government and private industry (Aerojet and Westinghouse) effort headed by the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office (SNPO). Core of cylindrical nuclear reactor inside the rocket through which hydrogen gas passes. Hydrogen is expanded through the nozzle to provide thrust. Reactor works by fission of uranium 235. Neutron particles reflected back to the reactor. Rotating rods installed in reflectors around the reactor to control the heat generated. Reactors on test stand in testing area.
