Battle of Hanoi during First Indochina War between France and Viet Minh Vietnamese, 1946.
Film begins showing an army truck filled with Viet Minh soldiers driving on a street in Hanoi, Indochina (Vietnam), during the Battle of Hanoi in December 1946 (early in First Indochina War). Next, French soldiers wearing berets are seen in defensive positions at a port. Bursting bombs from Viet Minh attack raise black smoke in the background as civilians run away from the area, and Viet Minh troops rush forward taking up positions in Hanoi. Views of civilians hunkering down behind trees, under cars, and other means of protection, while plumes of black smoke rise in the near background. More scenes of civilian refugees fleeing. A man carrying two young children runs by a building with sign "Chi-Thành" (denoting the Duong Chi Thanh street area and neighborhood of Hanoi). A fire raging in the background. Viet Minh troops in defensive positions behind a wall. Activity along a tree-lined avenue. A police van with French and Vietnamese identification driving along a road with a Red Cross flag flying above it. Injured youth lying on a sidewalk with another teenage boy beside him. A nurse in white attire, directing men carrying a wounded person on a litter. Jeep in background with text sign "Trung Liet" on its hood (denoting the Hanoi neighborhood of Trung Liệt). Ho Chi Minh at labor rally
French colonials, carrying French tricolor flags, and Vietnamese civilians, carrying North Vietnamese flags, mingle with French and Vietnamese military and officials, outside airport. men carry a huge banner. The banner reads 'Viet Nam Lao Dong Lien Doan', meaning: Vietnam Labor Union. A group of young Vietnamese women, carry flags and chant. Small Vietnamese children wave flags. A DC-3 aircraft, with North Vietnam flags in the windows, taxis to a stop. North Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, emerges, followed by Jean Sainteny, delegate from the High Commissioner of France. Ho Chi Minh is immediately surrounded by high ranking French officers and officials and press and photographers. A little Vietnamese girl presents him flowers. Ho Chi Minh makes a public statement into two microphones covered by hankerchiefs (to muffle wind?).

A plaque on building reads: National Viet Minh Convention. Ho Chi Minh poses with early Viet Minh comrades. In meeting hall, the wall behind principal speakers is decorated with pictures of Soviet leaders and large picture of Ho Chi Minh, together with signs containing positive slogans. Separately, Ho Chi Minh meets with his cabinet (of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) in a well appointed conference area set up on a veranda, with decorative iron railings around it. Large maps are on the wall behind Ho Chi Minh at the head of the conference table.
