U.S. Navy submarines of the Asiatic Fleet maintain readiness prior to World War II in the Pacific.
Film opens with aerial view of a U.S. Navy submarine squadron of the Asiatic Fleet, afloat, with approximately 20 submarines clustered alongside their tender, USS Holland (AS-3). Views from a small boat (unseen) circling the boats show the Hollsnd, from near the USS Shark (SS-174). Camera boat moves past submarine numbered P7 and the USS S-29 (SS-134) docked next to it. View on from deck of the tender shows submarines clustered around her. Sailors work on her lines, as they stand near one of her 5-inch guns. views of machine shop aboard the tender, showing sailors at work. One is machining a part on a lathe. Another is working on a saltwater depth guage. Sailors placing torpedoes into the tender's storage vaults. Scene shifts to sailors holding line on a diver under water doing repair work on the tender. Sailors placing supplies aboard the USS Permit (SS-178) as it prepares for a practice diving cruise. The USS Plunger (SS-179) is seen next to it. Submarines: USS Pickerel (SS-177), USS Salmon (SS-182),USS Seal (SS-183), and USS Pollack (SS-180), are also seen. The USS Permit moves to get underway. Several boats are seen maneuvering, including the USS Skipjack (SS-184) and the USS Sturgeon (SS-187).

In opening scene, the USS Sturgeon (SS-187) is seen underway for readiness training exercise cruise. It is followed by the USS Skipjack (SS-184) and the USS Seal (SS-183). Two more submarines follow. Glimpse of sailors on deck as a sub travels on the surface, and of the Captain with binoculars in conning tower. Crew member using a pelorus. Crew members below, in engine room. View through bulkhead opening of the U.S. Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) underway to port. (This is probably during the Pacific Fleet Problem XXI, 2 April to 21 June 1940.) Next, the Saratoga is seen at some distance steaming and billowing black smoke. Several views of subs moving on the surface. Captain in conning tower orders crew to submerge, and horn sounds alarm. Crew members descending ladders to their respective stations below deck. View from below as the Captain descends securing the water-tight hatch behind him. Sailors shut down the diesel engines, open ballast valves, and begin descent. Views inside and from outside as the boat submerges. Captain looks through the periscope. Glimpse of view through the periscope. Target (for this Fleet Problem exercise) is an Iowa-class battleship. Sailor stands near two torpedo tubes loaded and ready. Captain at periscope. Torpedoes are fired and registered as two direct hits. Crew prepares to surface. View of the submarine bow during surfacing reveals it is the USS Stingray (SS-186) which was under command of Lieutenant Leon Nelson Blair, at that time. The crew is seen climbing up on deck to man their 3-inch,50 caliber deck gun. The gun being fired as the submarine makes way on the surface. Crew sitting down in their mess and them preparing their bunks. (World War II period).
221st anniversary of Navy celebrated at Aircraft Carrier Theodore Roosevelt in Norfolk Virginia.

Next the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)is seen underway. Behind a waving U.S. flag, the destroyer, USS Barry (DDG-52) is seen in the distance. Closeup of the fast attack submarine, USS Atlanta (SSN-712) surfacing with a huge splash. Scene shifts them speaking as they walk along the empty flight deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Suddenly a slate, reading,"March 1996, Crisis Looming?" overlays view of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. An F-14 aircraft takes off from a carrier deck. An amphibious assault ship is shown. Red shirts moving ordnance aboard a carrier. An F-14 being catapulted. Four segment split screen shows a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC); a marine aiming a weapon; an amphibious assault ship; and President Bill Clinton, wearing a flight jacket and a cap identifying the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) as he speaks during a visit to that ship. Full screen of the President, is followed by another F-14 being catapulted. Scene shifts back to empty deck of the Theodore Roosevelt. Petty Officer Demetrios Adams is introduced. Noting that their catapult is in some maintenance activity, Adams describes its operation. Below decks in the bomb assembly shop, Aviation ordnanceman 2nd class Joel Bell, who describes assembling 500, 1000, and 2000 pound bombs seen behind him. Next, Petty Officer Charles Warren is introduced in the jet shop. Standing near jet engines he describes duties of his shop. Next, in damage control central, Electrician's mate, 1st Class, Jack Rickart, explains his duties (mentioning two nuclear reactors). At the flight deck control board, Petty Officer, Michael Knowles tells about the flight deck "Ouija board." Program hosts are back on flight deck next to ship's "Island." Sailors approach in dungarees. Others are shown at work on the ship. The USS Albany (SSN-753) moving on surface. Sailor Layton McGaw,Landing Craft chief Engineer speaks briefly.
