Robert Ballard and crews prepare deep sea submersible,"Alvin", for an expedition to the Caribbean

The research vessel,"Knorr," at harbor in Woods Hole, Massachussets. Oceanographer Robert Duane Ballard and crews of "Knorr", and "Lulu" prepare for Caribbean expedition, by test diving the deep sea submersible, "Alvin" in local waters. Mr.Ballard discusses his techniques to study the evolution of the Earth's surface. Ballard leaves the Knorr, aboard a skiff, and proceeds to the mother ship,"Lulu", where the deep diving submersible, "Alvin" is kept. Crewmen make adjustments to the "Alvin" and lower it by winches and cables, through an opening in the "Lulu" deck. Ballard and his pilot enter the Alvin for an 8 hour operation check run. People gathered at New York harbor to welcome the U.S. Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team back from battlefields of Europe

The U.S. Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team, composed of Japanese-Americans, is welcomed back after three years of combat in Europe, during World War II. The Combat Team soldiers aboard their trooop ship entering New York Harbor. They display their logo and motto, "shoot the works," on the side of the ship. New York City skyline visible behind the ship. Family and friends gathered at a harbor to receive and welcome them. Since many of the soldiers are from Hawaii, their reception committee includes several hula dancers who also bedeck them with garlands (leis) of flowers as they disembark from the ship. The Combat Team assembles on the wharf and marches away.
