The First Battle of the Masurian Lakes, September 1-7, 1914, in World War 1. Animated map shows maneuvering of German 8th Army forces under Paul von Hindenburg in East Prussia, against the Russian 1st Army under Paul von Rennenkampf. This is a German counter offensive following their victory against the German 2nd Army in the battle of Tannenberg, in August,. The animated map shows rapid movements of the German forces (reflecting their use of extensive rail networks in the area). Slate states that 350 thousand Russian prisoners were taken in this new quick German counterattack. Remainder of the sequence shows countless numbers of surrendered Russian First Army troops marching along a road.
Austro-Hungarian officers under the command of General Eduard Freiherr von Bohm-Ermolli enter the city after recapturing Lemberg (aka Lviv) in Galicia (the part now in Ukraine) from the Russians in World War 1. Citizens line the sidewalks to watch as a motorcade of Austrian officers, in open staff cars, drive into the city. Soldiers are posted along the street,to maintain order, but several bystanders still manage to run into the street to throw flowers to the passing cars. Monsignor Count Andrew Sheptytzkyj (aka Andrey Sheptytsky) the Archbishop Metropolite of the Uniate Greek Catholic Church, is seen in the midst of a group of senior Austro-Hungarian officers. The Archbishop had been imprisoned by the Russians,during their occupation of Lemberg. He converses with one of the officers. (WWI; WW1)
View of a pedestal-mounted French 155mm long gun, in a well-fortified position during World War 1. The emplacement is protected all around with rows of sand bags. It is deep enough that the gun is not visible until raised to fire (and then only the barrel is visible). The French Army artillery gun crew loads the gun and the soldiers fire two rounds. Next scene shows a mounted army bugler sounding a call in a snowy army camp field. Regimental lancers (Ulanen) ride into view leading a column of various kinds of troops. The lancers are seen galloping along a path, followed by troops and supplies in wagons pulled by teams of horses. A group of senior officers is gathered near one looking through tripod mounted periscopic binoculars. They see French columns on a hill held by German troops. Austro-Hungarian infantry move down a snowy hillside. In the distance, French troops are assembled and march in small unit formations across a flat snow-covered field to engage the German soldiers in trenches. The French infantry begin to run on their attack. Several are seen falling to German gunfire during the battle. Then they are seen retreating in formation. Fallen French soldiers lie in the snow. The French infantry reform and launch another attack, making a right flanking movement before moving forward, this time. In their final assault, they swarm uphill, leaving many dead and injured lying in the snow behind them. Later they are seen carrying the bodies of the fallen from the field. Austrian medics on skis come the the aid of a wounded comrade. They improvise a sled from skis and pull the wounded soldier on it.
