President Kennedy and official party arrive at area 576A at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, where they watch the launch of the Atlas134D intercontinental ballistic missile.
Launch of ICBM Atlas 134D from C-133. Atlas 134D lifts from ground to a vertical position. Flames emerge from the tunnel door as missile ignites.134D takes off and climbs into sky.23 March 1962.
First in-silo launch of liquid fueled ICBM Titan VS-1 from Silo Launch Test Facility,Vandenberg. Code named 'Silver Saddle' the Titan carries a dummy second stage. Ground level surface of silo. Flames ignite from two silo ducts after initial ignition. Missile emerges from ground and climbs up in to sky. 3 May 1961. (Note: This launch was an engineering test of the range safety destruct system as well as a prototype Titan II silo, as that missile was still over a year away from its first launch. Following first stage burnout, the dummy second stage, which was filled with water, was detonated. The water formed an ice cloud that was then photographed. This experiment would later be performed on two Saturn I launches.)
