A contingent of Armed Axis troops, led by an officer, marches West through Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, intending to surrender to U.S. and UK forces of the Western Allies during final days of World War 2. A long line of German soldiers follows, some in horse-drawn wagons, and similar conveyances. Among the troops are some from Russia in German uniforms. Some of the surrendering German troops appear to be young boy soldiers.
Opening scene shows ground crew loading bombs on a Martin B-26 Marauder aircraft of the USAAF 323rd Bombardment Group at Denain-Prouvy Airdrome, France (A-83) in World War 2. The aircraft is parked on pierced steel planking (Marsden Matting). Glimpse of aircrew members, carrying their parachutes, as they climb into the back of an open truck. Next, ground crewman steadies a bomb as another man operates controls to lower it from an M6 bomb service truck. Ground crewman screws fins on the bomb. View shifts to inside the truck carrying aircrew members, as more climb aboard it. Several crew members climb down from the truck, as it arrives at their aircraft. Others are seen already at their respective aircraft parked nearby. Rough slate identifies the airfield as A-83, and day as 22 April. An officer, bombardier, is seen strapping himself into the nose of a B-26. Bombardier makes adjustments to his bomb sight. Pilot and copilot close their respective canopies. Allied soldiers cheer to celebrate the occasion of World War II coming to an end, around the time of VJ Day (Victory over Japan) at the end of World War 2. Allied prisoners liberated from Japanese prison camps are seen arriving by railroad train at stations for transfer to nearby ships. The former POW soldiers greet and embrace one another. A uniformed soldier kisses a woman soldier in uniform. They move in trucks celebrating Allied victory in war. Cheering soldiers hold up an American flag at the front of the truck filled with liberated prisoners. A boat carries some liberated soldiers toward the United States hospital ship USS Benevolence (AH-13), as a former Japanese guards watches from shore, and U.S soldiers look on. Flags of Allied nations are seen, superimposed on images of saluting soldiers, as soundtrack in background plays audio of part of speech by General MacArthur aboard the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender ceremony.
