Pickets attempt to stop the reopening of the Newton steel plant by non-unionized workers in Monroe Michigan

Approximately 120 strikers confront 1000 non-unionized workers and try to stop the reopening of the Newton steel plant in Monroe Michigan. Initially ,the pickets, armed with clubs and rocks, are able to prevent non-union workers from driving into the plant. The strikers are then outnumbered and scattered after being confronted by forces armed with tear gas. The picket line breaks and cars begin driving through to the plant. Strikers continue to fight, attempting to pull non-union workers out of their cars. The strikers are again attacked with tear gas, and they run into an orchard. The strikers cars are overturned or pushed into the river. The National Guard is summoned by Governor Murphy to take over and restore order. A union spokesman gives a speech, declaring that the union will get into Monroe eventually.

Passenger ship African Comet launched from Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi.

Joe Dimaggio extends hitting streak against Washington Senators baseball team, 1941

Newsreel clip of baseball star Joe DiMaggio, "The Yankee Clipper," extending his hitting streak to 42 against the Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium in DC. Shot of large crowd in stands, most in white shirts. DiMaggio walks onto the field, kneels in on-deck circle with two bats. Senators pitcher Red Anderson (#18) throws a pitch. DiMaggio (with photographers positioned just a few feet away) hits it into left field for a single. DiMaggio slightly tips his cap at first base, gets pat on the back from first base coach. DiMaggio later comes around to score on another Yankee hit, is welcomed by teammates as he enters the dugout. DiMaggio poses for cameras in clubhouse after the game, a 7-5 Yankees victory. (Note: DiMaggio hitting streak would reach 56 games, which remains a record as of this writing, more than 70 years later.)
