Irene Castle currently starring in the serial film "Patria" is seated on deck. She wears a fur coat and is holding a pet monkey. (Her husband, and professional dance partner, Vernon Castle, was away, flying as a pilot with the British Royal Flying Corps.)
Italian nationalist leader Gabriele D'Annunzio and other Italian irredentist leaders are warmly welcomed in the Adriatic port city of Fiume as his contingent of Italian military volunteers occupies the Adriatic city in September, 1919. Ships seen docked in the background, between buildings. Irredentism leader D'Annunzio, with a wide collar atop his uniform, and wearing gloves, speaks forcefully to the assembled crowd . Several of the officers are carried down the street atop the shoulders of the cheering crowd. A warship is docked in the background. Flag of the Kingdom of Italy is seen in the crowd. Gabriele D'Annunzio is seen later, in uniform with shirt and tie, but without the collar and gloves, making his way through the crowd and then becoming the center of attention for the cameraman, as he poses surrounded by young military volunteer admirers.
The Austro-Hungarian Battleship, SMS Szent Istvan, is seen immediately after being torpedoed, off the Dalmation Coast, by Italian torpedo boats, during World War One. Smoke rising from the listing ship. She capsizes, rolling over completely as crew members slide off the decks and onto the hull as it rolls over. Crew members continue to slide off the ship into the water and swim away from the stricken ship.
The Austro-Hungarian Battleship, SMS Szent Istvan (Saint Stephen), capsizing after it is torpedoed off the Dalmation Coast by by Italian torpedo boats, during World War One. Sailors in a lifeboat are seen rescuing survivors from the battleship. The stricken vessel continues to roll over completely and crew members can be seen scrambling on her overturned hull and in the water all around her. In a short while, the SMS Szent Istvan sinks out of sight.
Russian warships, destroyers, and submarines maneuver and fire heavy guns in the Black Sea,during World War I. Heavy black smoke rises from ship funnels and from gun firing. Mountains seen in the background. Captain, standing next to helmsman, bends down and speaks on intercom. Several destroyers maneuver and partially visible submerged submarines are seen. Signalman on deck uses semaphore flags.
