Captured Japanese submarines I-14 and an I-400 class sub are sunk off the coast of Oahu Hawaii after the end of World War II
View of two captured Japanese submarines taken from a periscope off the coast of Oahu Hawaii, soon after the end of World War II. (U.S. Navy records of this footage state that the two submarines shown are of the RO-26 and RO-51 class, but this does not appear to be true based on observation of the images). The first submarine is unidentified. The second submarine shown in the periscope view is the Type AM Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-14. Closer periscope view then shows I-14 painted on the side of the submarine tower. Large explosion as submarine I-14 is hit by a torpedo from the USS Bugara (SS-331). Japanese submarine I-14 is seen sinking slowly. Next shot shows Japanese I-400 class submarine in the distance, and then up close through periscope. This is likely I-401 or I-400. Final portion of clip shows view from surface of water as I-400 class submarine sinks, after being torpedoed. This is most likely the May 31, 1946 sinking of Japanese submarine I-401 by the USS Cabezon (SS-334), but could possibly be the June 4, 1946 sinking of submarine I-400 by the USS Trumpetfish (SS-425). A HO3S helicopter flies overhead as the I-400 class submarine sinks.
B-29 "Dave's Dream" returns to airfield in Marshall Islands after Test Able atomic bomb drop on Bikini Atoll
The B-29 "Dave's Dream" returns to airfield in Marshall Islands, after dropping atomic bomb on Bikini Atoll, in Test Able of Operation Crossroads, on July 1st, 1946, during U.S. nuclear testing. The B-29 lands and taxis to a parking place on the ramp. The area around the aircraft is cordoned off and the crew is confined therein as they deplane. Navy photographers take photos. An interviewer talks to crew members. The crew walks away from the aircraft along a cordoned pathway between numerous military personnel on hand to greet them on this historic occasion. The aircraft, number 44-27354, was actually participating in its second atomic mission. It also served as a photographic platform for the mission to Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, when it was named "Big Stink.". Pilot for the Bikini mission was Major Woodrow Swancutt of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. The aircraft was renamed "Dave's Dream" in honor of Captain David Semple, a bombardier killed during the crash of another B-29 on March 7, 1946, near Albuquerque, New Mexico. (World War II period).

First Lieutenant Don Pinciotti, assigned to ASCOM-C 8th Army Headquarters, as Athletic Officer in charge of all Recreational Activities, for USA troops in and around the Yokahama area, is seen playing as catcher and manager of the 8th Army Chicks. Japanese bat boys sit near the dugout. (Note: Pinciotti returned to the United States in August 1946 to complete his studies at the University of Dayton, where he also played football and made All-Ohio and Catholic All-American in 1946. He graduated in June 1947. Prior to graduation, he signed a contract to play professional football with the Detroit Lions and after graduation, he signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Chicago White Sox.)

Men, women, and children arriving at New York City on May 20, 1946 after a voyage that departed Bremerhaven Germany on May 11, 1946. People greet relatives at the dock in New York. Two young men and a girl stand together and show the concentration camp tattoos on their arms. The tattoo numbers are A9496 on the young man with the hat, A13889 on the girl, and B3073 on the young man without a hat. The young man with tattoo B3073 is Berel Gola (later called Bernard Gola) a 20 year old Jewish man from Poland. He had been imprisoned by the Nazis at Treblinka and at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, where he received the tattoo. A woman and a man holding a young girl stand. Women holding children stand by. The Neo-Classical building is the Texas State Capital at Austin, Texas and Austin Texas is noted on the graduate’s diploma “Bergstrom Field, Austin, Texas”. At this time the 349th Troop Carrier Group was based at Bergstrom and assigned to the Third Air Force, Tactical Air Command as noted on the diploma. Also “Air Force Combat Units of World War II” Edited by Maurer Maurer states this unit trained Chinese crews to operate C-46 aircraft. Film is very interesting in that it visually shows the transition from “Army brown to Air Force Blue” for the C-46s still carry the I TROOP CARRIER COMMAND insigne on the nose, with was disbanded on 4 Nov 1945 but they have the new AAF wide "Buzz Numbers" for all aircraft operating solely within the continental USA, by T.O. 07-1-1 of November 1945 and the graduate’s diploma is notating the new post-war air force type command reorganization of March 1946.
