Dramatization: Unrest between whites and African Americans in South Carolina
Excerpt from the fictional film "Birth of a Nation". A pro-Southern dramatization by actors on the effect of the Civil War and the Reconstruction. A man sits on a chair. He looks at a paper. A man arrives. Two African American soldiers with swords in their hands arrive with the man. They talk amongst themselves. They argue. The man gives a white mask and clothes to him. He goes back. A lady arrives near the man. She talks to him. She views the paper and discusses with him.

Savory (Dr. Savory was co-owner of the New York Amsterdam News). The next scene shows Elise Johnson McDougald, better known as Gertrude Elise Ayer, who was the first black full-time public school principal after the consolidation of New York City schools in 1898. She was also a noted woman writer during the Harlem Renaissance. She is seated in her office at her desk, likely in P.S. 119 in Harlem, since this is approximately year 1945 and she was at P.S 119 at that time. Her name plaque is visible on the front center of the desk. Principal Ayer smiles as a woman delivers a document to her. Next is seen the African American historian, author, and professor, Lawrence D. Reddick, serving in his role as the curator of the Schomburg Collection of African American Literature. In an art studio is seen the famous African American sculptor and painter Charles Alston, at work on a sculpture. Next scene shows the famous African American contralto singer, Marian Anderson, receiving a bouquet of flowers and smiling after a performance. This transitions to a view of African American orchestra conductor Dean Dixon leading an orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Several views of different sections of the orchestra performing under Dixon's direction. Flags of their respective nations are displayed above their seats. Seen are flags of Venezuela; Chile; Mexico; Cuba; and others. View out a passenger compartment window in the aircraft, showing the second DC-3 flying nearby. Scene shifts to the cockpit, where the copilot is seen at his position. They stand in place and move their rifles synchronously during the drill. A single Coast Guardsman performs drill maneuvers on the deck of a ship. Coast Guardsmen supervise and guard the site of a large liquor bust during Prohibition. The bust is at the corner of North Water Street and Market Street in Wilmington North Carolina, on the bank of the Cape Fear River. A Coast Guard ship moored at pier along Water Street. Hundreds of wooden boxes heaped along Water Street in front of what is today the Alton Lennon Federal Building and Courthouse, between Market and Princess streets. Workers destroy the boxes with axes and sledge hammers while Coast Guard look on. Illegal liquor flowing in the street. Men continue to remove more boxes from the building at the corner of Water and Market. Road is filled with smashed boxes. Crowd watches the activities from the end of Market Street. A truck arrives to pick up the smashed boxes. Boats and ships at the port by the street are shown. Smashed boxes are loaded on the truck. One nearby building is named the "Union Cafe". A book shop is in the same building. (Today, that building at 14 South Water Street is site of the Riverboat Landing Restaurant). The JW Brooks Wholesale Grocer building is also seen in the footage, with its sign painted on the Market Street side of its brick face.
