Role of United States Coast Guards. A luxury liner, SS Morro Castle burns at sea as smoke rises from it. United States Coast Guard Cutter Tampa (WPG-48) underway to rescue the people on board the liner. A 75 foot long patrol boat underway to reach the burning vessel. Men aboard life boats. Men swim in the sea as lifeboats rescue them. Men swim towards the beach where beach patrol men save their lives. Smoke rises from the burning ship. USCG Cutter Tampa seen towing the SS Morro Castle after the disaster (but the hawser then broke and the Morro Castle drifted aground). (Sound present only at end of clip beginning around 3:10 mark). Scenes of Ward Line ship, the SS Morro Castle engulfed in fire during its return to New York from Havana, Cuba. Coast guard boats, fishing smacks, big liners stand by to rescue travelers. Local citizens and police assembled on the coastline to retrieve the dead and nurse the wounded. Scenes of grief stricken and shocked survivors including men, women, and children. Some scenes from rescue ships which included the SS Andrea F. Luckenbach, the SS Monarch of Bermuda, and the SS City of Savannah. Three survivors recount their stories (sound is present at this point in the clip, starting around 3:10 mark).

The pilot delivers a mail pouch to James A. Farley, the U.S. Postmaster General, thus initiating airmail service between Camden New Jersey and Philadelphia.
