Re-enactment of an attack by a German U-boat on a U.S. Merchantman underway in the Atlantic Ocean during World War 2. U.S. merchant seamen below decks as torpedo hits. Everything is shaken up and water enters their mess hall. The ship catches fire. Some seamen are thrown out of their bunks. All struggle to evacuate the lower decks. Fire breaks out. Radio operator telegraphs for help. Seaman don life vests. The Captain orders a General Alarm for all hands on deck. Meanwhile, the Captain of the submerged German submarine orders another torpedo to be fired. it races through the water and explodes on impact. Fire is everywhere and the ship is listing. The U-boat surfaces and crew man their deck gun. From their lifeboat, the merchant seaman watch as a shell from the U-boat deck gun strikes the burning hulk of their ship. The U-boat steers, on the surface toward the lifeboat. The survivors exchange harsh words with the U-boat captain, as one of his officers photographs the scene. The U-boat then rams the lifeboat, cutting it in two. The survivors swim to a nearby raft.
