German Operation Barbarossa on the Eastern front in World War II
Animated map shows extent of German controlled areas in Europe following their conquest of the Balkans in World War 2. Norway is under their control and German forces threaten Leningrad and Moscow. A soviet defense line is shown on the map. The German attack is shown to come from 5 directions on June 22, 1941, with the launch of German Operation Barbarossa. A sky filled with German Heinkel He 111 bombers is shown. German Panzer III tanks with 75 mm guns. Army trucks carry German troops into battle. German soldiers on motor cycles and infantry advance under fire. Animated map shows principal German targets as Leningrad, Moscow, and Kiev. It then shows beginning a drive from the North to encircle Leningrad. Arrows show where German Marshal Fedor von Bock's forces drove 480 miles into Soviet territory. Slates identify cities being overrun by German invaders, including: Pskov, Novgorod, Brest-litovsk, Minsk,Mogilev, and Vitebsk. On July 17, 1941, a German tank is seen entering Smolensk, past the Dnieper River threatening Moscow, itself. To the south, German forces, under Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, cut deep into the Ukraine. Animated map shows this technique in the German invasions of Poland, France, the Balkans, and Yugoslavia. In contrast, the Soviet planners are seen, as map illustrates how they intend to take advantage of the vast area of their land by holding lines of defense an falling back as necessary to keep engaging the invaders across interior of the Soviet Union. Citizens of Sofia, Bulgaria gather to sign the letter of appreciation to Joseph Stalin for liberating them from German occupation in World War 2. A man on a stage reading the letter in front of a gathering of working men, some who appear to be miners. The man on stage is flanked by pictures of Stalin and Lenin as he addresses the crowd of industrial workers. Next a gathering of women workers is seen at an indoor rally, with a woman leading a cheer for Stalin. The women applaud. A group of men and women workers wait in line to sign a registry with notes of appreciation. In another gathering, men in suits, possibly government officials, are seen signing a registry. Opening scene shows a tramp steamer listing to starboard.during World War 1. She displays "India, Greece" in large letters on her side. Slate indicates that an explosives technician from a U-Boat had climbed aboard and set charges on the Greek Steamer, "India" as she is stopped in the Atlantic during World War 1. The India is carrying a cargo of coal from Cardiff Wales, to Oran. The ship is seen listing. Smoke still rises from her stack. Slate states that the cross on the hull of the sinking "India" is the Greek national emblem. The ship sinks lower and finally slides out of sight, with smoke rising above the water from her exploding boilers. (Note: This German U-boat is the SM U-35, which was operating in the western approaches to the Straits of Gibraltar after leaving the Mediterranean on 11-12 April. It carried a professional cinematographer on board. Two years earlier, on June 12, 1915 , the U-35 also sank the British ship, "Crown of India." ) The next sequence shows an image of the German Daily Express newspaper for Monday May 10, 1915. Dead! it reports in bold print: The world has a duty to conduct a Hunt for turtles. Scene shifts to deck of surfaced German U-boat, showing a dinghy arriving alongside, from which several giant sea turtles are unloaded. Crew members examine the turtles on the deck of the submarine. At least one appears to be dead. Next scene shows lookouts on conning tower of the U-Boat, as they see smoke on the horizon. (The Imperial German Naval war flag is displayed on the conning tower.) From a 1961 film: Clip includes mix of reenacted, fictional scenes and authentic period footage from the early 1900's, as follows: Clip opens with fictional re-enacted scenes of immigrants to America from Eastern Europe, around the turn of the 20th Century. Reenacted scene as a woman dances, followed by scene of immigrants crowded into a hall. Arriving immigrants pose for camera. Next scene is actual period footage from the first few years of the 1900s (approximately 1905 or 1906) of a street car traveling along a track on Market Street in San Francisco, California, with early automobile cars and another street car crossing in front of it. The San Francisco Ferry Building clock tower on the Embarcadero is seen in the distance. Next series of scenes are fictional reenactments of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Next is actual period footage of the aftermath of the earthquake, with San Francisco residents walking on a streets in front of a destroyed building. Partial signs are seen on the corner of the building that read "...Standard Paint" and "The Lowe...." Next segment is authentic period footage also, and shows both still image and moving image views of buildings and fountains at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

AAA-sponsored 500 mile race at Twin City Motor Speedway in Minnesota, on Labor Day, 1915. Scenes of racing cars running and of groups of cars as they begin the race, with racing teams pushing their cars off. Race driver, Dario Resta, who had earned a pole position with a qualifying speed of 102.8 mph, is seen as he pulls off the track in his Mercedes, abandoning the race, after completing 110 miles, because the cap on back of his oil pump had come off, causing pump failure and oil loss. His racing crew surround the car. The next scene shows Resta posing beside his Mercedes, number 24. One of his team playfully pokes him in the ribs. Flagman steps into track and waves as officials in two passenger cars drive past.

They ride along a major thoroughfare in the City of Baltimore. Buildings along the street are decorated with patriotic bunting. Scene shifts to view from a pier, of a U.S. Navy single-funnel gun boat is seen making way, slowly In Baltimore harbor. Closeup of Group of women, dressed in white, aboard the boat, ares seen holding a large memorial wreath over side of the boat. Next, the camera shows a U.S. Aeromarine AS-2 Float Plane landing in the water. As it taxis in, the scene shifts back to the women on the boat, holding the memorial wreath. They are seen from behind, as they hold it high over their heads, and cast it over the side into the water. View of the women clustered in the bow of the boat as it moves slowly in the water. Other persons are present on deck, including at least one soldier and photographers and reporters. The U.S. navy ensign of stars flies from the bow. Closeup of the women in the bow, who now throw flowers into the water. Closeup of a woman (possibly Lusitania survivor). She stands next to the gun boat (now docked) holding a bouquet of flowers and wearing a sash reading “Lusitania.” Next, the camera focuses on Lusitania survivor, British actress, Rita Jolivet, who stands on a pier with a building and automobile behind her. Scene shifts, again, to the ladies in white aboard the docked gun boat. Among those seen with them are two British Royal Navy officers in uniform. Final scene is of large public gathering at an outdoor pavilion. A military band is at the front of the gathering. Public figures are assembled on the stage. A color guard carrying American flags is moving through the crowd, toward the stage.
