French actress Sara Bernhardt is wheeled down the gangplank from the French ocean liner Espagne in New York City. She has returned on the passenger ship from a visit to France and the French front during World War 1. She stands up from her wheel chair and addresses the crowd on the dock. Bernhardt drapes an American flag over her lap and over the side of a car in which she is sitting. She committed the profits of her tour in the U.S. to French widows and orphans of the war.
President Woodrow Wilson returns to his home at Princeton, New Jersey, after casting his vote int the 1916 National election. The President moves through a crowd to enter his car. Scene shifts to some Well known Republican politicians and leaders walking in a group along a street in New York City. At the far left is Republican New York City Mayor John Purroy Mitchel aka "The Boy Mayor of New York. Near the center of the group is "Charles Evans Hughes, former Governor of New York State, and former Associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court who is running for President as a Republican, against Democratic incumbent President Woodrow Wilson. (Hughes resigned from the Court in June, 2016, to pursue the Presidential bid.) The group is being followed by some newsmen and photographers, and curious onlookers, walking in the street. One with a newspaper stuffed in his jacket pocket, reaches out to Justice Hughes and shakes his hand. Next, Justice Hughes is seen posing briefly, with others, on the sidewalk in front of a building. He starts to doff his hat.
The German U-boat submarine, Deutschland, repaired after a 16 November, 1916 collision with the tugboat "T.A. Scott Jr.", leaves U.S. for Germany on 21 November, 1916. The launch "Efco" opens the pontoon fence guarding the submarine's berth, and the submarine slowly moves out of the dock area. She carries 6.5 tons of silver bullion on this successful British blockade-evading voyage back to Germany.
In New York Harbor, the United States passenger ship SS Manchuria (later the World War 1 troop transport ship USS Manchuria, ID-1633) being loaded with cargo including armament (artillery gun is partially seen). Crew members on the ship loading items from a smaller vessel. Smoke rises from the smokestack of a passenger steam ship as it passes the Statue of Liberty.
SS Adriatic, the largest passenger liner in Trans-Atlantic service, arrives safely in New York City., from the Atlantic U-Boat war zone during World War 1. Irene Castle currently starring in the serial film "Patria" is seated on deck. She wears a fur coat and is holding a pet monkey. (Her husband, and professional dance partner, Vernon Castle, was away, flying as a pilot with the British Royal Flying Corps.)
Striking miners gather at a mountainside for a mass meeting in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. A man addresses the miners on labor strike. Anthracite coal mine workers in mass meeting urged to remain firm but orderly.
