Women in the war effort, working at commercial labor jobs in the United Kingdom during World War 1. Opening scene shows women paper hangers at work. Two apply glue to strips of wallpaper laid out on boards across wooden supports. Two others are applying the wallpaper on a wall. Change of scene shows about a dozen women, wearing aprons, working as a team to clean windows in a railroad passenger car in Britain. They each climb a step ladder to one of the car windows and work in parallel cleaning adjacent windows simultaneously with cloths.
Infantry of the 1st Battalion, the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, occupy and consolidate a captured German trench in France, during World War One. Troops are seen in the trench, readying it for use.
World War 1. after the Battle of the Ancre. Scottish Rifles Cameronians Regiment marching back from the front lines, led by their Regimental pipe band. Soldiers from Ireland (Irish 16th Division) take advantage of the temporary calm to sleep and rest in their trenches. Soldiers using the respite to wash and shave in their redoubt. Trops of the Scottish Rifles Cameronians Regiment gather together for evening of relaxation and song, accompanied by musicians from their Regimental band. Delegates of miners (presumably coal) arriving for meetings regarding conditions of miners and their families. They talk amongst themselves. A child watches men talk. A sign reads 'Board of trade' on the wall of the building. Houses of Parliament and Big Ben clock tower (lower half) visible in background as men wearing suits and bowler hats enter building. A deputation of women stands on steps outside the conference building. They attend on behalf of women and children of the miners. Women step up into carriage at curb.
