The American Interplanetary Society's first liquid fuel rocket is launched from Staten Island in New York, United States in 1933. George Edward Pendray of the AIS, and his associate preparing for the launch. The 7 1/2 foot rocket is placed on a stand. Other men look on. The rocket, fueled with gasoline and liquid oxygen, takes off. Its fuel tank overheats and explodes moments after takeoff and the rocket crashes to the beach below. (From a November 10, 1958 newsreel recounting events 25 years earlier. The world's first successful liquid fuel rocket was launched by Robert Goddard in Auburn, Massachusetts, on 16 March 1926. This film records the first such attempt under auspices of the American Interplanetary Society, in 1933. )

U.S. aircraft carriers USS Belleau Wood and USS Bunker Hill, and battleship USS New Jersey are launched in the United States.

Launch of two aircraft carriers and a battleship in the United States during World War II. People gathered at shipyards of New York Shipbuilding Corporation for the launch of the USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24). Sponsor Mrs. Thomas Holcomb seen with U.S. Marine Corps General Thomas Holcomb. Mrs. Holcomb christens the ship as it launches. Scene shifts to Fore River Shipyard in Massachusetts and launching of the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17). The aircraft carrier slides down skids into the water. Scene shifts to Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on the same day, December 7, 1942, as the launching ceremony for the Battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62). Carolyn Edison, wife of New Jersey Governor Charles Edison is seen christening the ship and it then slides into the water. Two boats underway in the background assist with positioning the Battleship.

Pacers compete in harness race on Yonkers Raceway, New York, at end of 1958 season

At the end of the harness racing season in Yonkers Raceway, a moving car carries mobile starting gate with harness racers aligned across the track behind it. The gate folds up and the starter car speeds away allowing the race to get underway. Spectators in the stands are seen dressed warmly on this cold, damp December day. The horses, and drivers in sulkies,race around the water-covered track. Narrator comments that horses were meant to run, not swim.
