Slate quarry in the southern Appalachian mountains
Man rides horse on dirt road in the southern Appalchian Mountains of western North Carolina or eastern Tennessee. 1930s era car drives past. Group of men working at a slate quarry. Using large sledge hammers, they hammer wedges into crevices and pry up large pieces of slate. A man puts a piece of slate into position for a building project.
Dust Bowl of 1930s. Farmers abandoning their homes with their families
Lewis Thaddeus Nordyke, newspaperman and author, who lived through the Dust Bowl in Dalhart, Texas, recounts how some people "stayed and prayed" in hopes of rain, always looking forward to "next year." Views of drought stricken land and sand covered houses during dust bowl in Great Depression. Scenes of farmers packing up their families and abandoning their homes. Some wear handerchief masks over their faces to protect against dust. Families load belongings into the backs of towed carts and trucks, leaving their homes. (Between 1935 and 1939, 350 thousand people left their homes in the dust bowl. Many migrated west toward California.)

Hogs at a farm in Ohio. Farmer loads pigs into truck in order to transport them to the market. The truck gets stuck in a muddy road and the farmer is unable to free his truck. The hogs get tired and jump out of the truck adding to the farmer's complications. Demonstrates problems with low quality road system for farmers getting from farm to market. Federally financed road construction shows workers during the Great Depression as they reconstruct and level rugged roads under the Farm to Market Roads Program.
