They pause to lower the flags in salute. Next, Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, Chief of the German General Staff, and his deputy, General Erich Ludendorff, lead a procession of German officers and officials, from near the main building in the stands. One of their group carries a sign reading: "1.G.I.D."
