A large banner reads: "America First. We appeal to you for mercy and justice. Our children are starving. Come down with the prices." A banner reads 'We want bread'. Women stand with children in strollers and baby carriages during the protest. A line of women and children march as families in the protest rally.

She has returned on the passenger ship from a visit to France and the French front during World War 1. She stands up from her wheel chair and addresses the crowd on the dock. Bernhardt drapes an American flag over her lap and over the side of a car in which she is sitting. She committed the profits of her tour in the U.S. to French widows and orphans of the war.
In New York Harbor, the United States passenger ship SS Manchuria (later the World War 1 troop transport ship USS Manchuria, ID-1633) being loaded with cargo including armament (artillery gun is partially seen). Crew members on the ship loading items from a smaller vessel. Smoke rises from the smokestack of a passenger steam ship as it passes the Statue of Liberty.

Irene Castle currently starring in the serial film "Patria" is seated on deck. She wears a fur coat and is holding a pet monkey. (Her husband, and professional dance partner, Vernon Castle, was away, flying as a pilot with the British Royal Flying Corps.)
