North American X-15 rocket plane landing on runway at Rogers Dry Lake, Edwards Air Force Base, California

Two chase planes break off from escorting an X-15 as it commences final approach to runway at Rogers Dry Lake, Edwards Air Force Base, California. The X-15 descends between surrounding hills, in a nose-high attitude and touches down on its skids, raising a trail of dust. Its nose gear contacts the ground immediately after its main gear skids. The X-15 continues a long way, leaving a trail of dust, until it finally comes to rest on the runway. AN H-21B helicopter flies over the stationary rocket plane.

Rocket powered aircraft X-15 with NB-52A Stratofortress in flight and lands at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

X-15 rocket plane in its first powered flight. Glimpse of water tower at Edwards Air Force Base, California. NASA NB-52, 52-003, carrying an X-15 under its wing is seen overhead, along with two chase planes. All are generating contrails. The X-15 releases from the B-52 and its separate contrail is seen. It lags well behind the B-52 for moment, and then accelerates up and past the B-52 mothership. It is seen as a white dot moving at high speed across the sky. (Note: This is X-15 No. 2, tail number: 56-6671. Scott Crossfield flew this mission at mach 2.11 and altitude 52,341 feet.)

X-15 rocket plane lands on Rogers Dry Lake runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California

F-100D chase plane flies over X-15 rocket plane while the latter is on final approach to land at Rogers Dry Lake runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California. NASA camera follows the X-15 as it nears the runway in a medium nose-up attitude and then touches down, first on its main skids, followed by its nose gear. The X-15 raises a trail of dust as it continues down the runway, past a truck in the foreground. As it comes to a halt, a truck races out to it. Two H-21 helicopters fly over it and one hovers nearby. Another truck and a fire truck and ambulance drive out to the X-15. It is last seen surrounded by emergency and support vehicles. (This mission involving X-15, tail number 56-6671, was unsuccessful, due to a liquid oxygen leak.)

Technicians examine X-15, after unsuccessful mission at Edwards Air Force Base, California

NASA X-15 parked on Rogers Dry Lake runway after landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California, immediately after an unsuccessful mission due to problems involving liquid oxygen tank pressure fluctuations. View from the rear, showing the twin vertical mounted rocket engines. Vehicles surround the aircraft and technicians work around it. Closeup of main gear skids and underbelly. View of auxiliary wheels to be attacked to main gear. (This is the number two X-15, tail number 56-6671.)

Images recorded on the occasion of the first powered flight of an X-15 Rocket Plane, at Edwards Air Force Base, California

The first successful powered flight of the X-15 Rocket Plane. Contrails at high altitude above, are seen, generated by the X-15 Rocket plane, 56-6671, and three chase planes. Scene shifts to view from a camera vehicle speeding across the Rogers Dry Lake bed towards the X-15 already landed on a runway. The three chase planes breaking away in background. Two Piasecki H-21 helicopters hovering low over the runway as the X-15 is obscured by dust it raised during its landing. The X-15 becomes visible as the dust settles. Officials step from a staff car that just arrived. The X-15 silhouetted with sunlight reflected on its top. Officials approach and surround the cockpit. One climbs upon the aircraft nose and helps open the cockpit canopy. Pilot, Scott Crossfield seen in the cockpit. Fire trucks and Air Force officers arrive. Firefighters direct a stream of cooling liquid at the rocket motors and rear of the X-15. Scott Crossfield, still in the cockpit, converses with officers and officials. Closeup of Crossfield in the cockpit. Technicians begin examining the exterior of the aircraft.
