Opening slate reads “New Americans Celebrate their Citizenship.” Huge Crowd is gathered in New York City’s Central Park, on “I am an American Day,” which also includes newly naturalized American citizens (although they are not featured, as such, in the film). New York Mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, presides and delivers a speech from a podium. New York clergymen are seated with one another on a front row seat where patriotic bunting is draped. Vice President Henry R. Wallace is also seen in that front row. Various views of U.S. military units parading along 5th Avenue in New York City. The units include huge columns of United States soldiers, including one large group of African American soldiers.
Children gathered at Golden Gate Park for May Day parade and celebrations. Young girls parade wearing dresses. The May Queen dressed in white gown stands. Teenage girls parade. May Queen is crowned. Children dance around the May Poles and crowd watches.
Post prohibition reenactment of speakeasy days, centered on 21 Club in New York City. Federal agent hands a warrant to employee, through grillwork of door. People drinking at bar. Men in suits talk to each other. Man guarding door presses hidden button to alert others to the presence of Federal agents. Speakeasy owners, wearing boutonnieres in their lapels, conduct business inside the club and toast to their deal. Liquor bottles being discarded and hidden in the process. Bartender totaling receipts.
Post prohibition reenactment of speakeasy days. Well-dressed patrons arriving at the 21 Club (21 West 52nd Street) in Manhattan, New York City. Employee at barred door, talks to a man outside, who is a Federal agent and presents a search warrant. Man inside reaches hidden button to alert others that Federal agents are here. Several Federal agents force their way in and search the basement for illegal liquor. Wealthy patrons continue to enter and leave the 21 Club. Further down the street, at number 35 West 52nd, a Trumpet player and guitarist perform on the sidewalk under an awning reading: 'Casino De Luxe 35'. Patrons are seen entering and leaving number 33 West 52nd Street, Letters on awning read 'Leon & Eddie'. Automobiles parked along street. Sign on building reads 'Tony's'. Another awning sign reads: Casino de Luxe.
