President Woodrow Wilson's "Pilgrimage of the Heart" visit to Carlisle, England, in 1918.
On the way to the Paris Peace conference, President and Mrs. Wilson visit Carlisle, England, on 29 December 1918. Crowds gather at the Market Place in Carlisle, England, to welcome President Wilson on his “pilgrimage of the heart” visit to this birthplace of his mother. The weather is foggy and drizzling. The Crown & Mitre Hotel (English St, Carlisle CA3 8HZ, United Kingdom), where the President and First lady are staying, and where Wilson signed the freemen's roll, can be seen faintly across the square. A troop of horsemen lead an open horse-drawn carriage carrying the President, Carlisle Mayor Bertram Carr and another official. They step from the carriage in front of the Town Hall to await a second carriage carrying First Lady, Mr. Edith Wilson. While waiting, Wilson doffs his hat and waves to the crowds attending despite inclement weather. The second carriage arrives, and Mrs. Wilson waves a large bouquet of flowers as she steps down from the carriage, followed by Lady Mayoress, Miss Eleanor Carr. The President, First Lady, and others then enter the Town Hall.

The U.S. Presidential Yacht, USS Mayflower (PY-1), carrying Secretary of the Navy,Josephus Daniels, makes its way between U.S. warships in the Port of New York during the Naval Fleet Review on Christmas Day, 1918, at the end of World War 2. A 4-stacker destroyer is seen briefly, to port side of the Mayflower. Later she is seen passing New York City piers, along the shoreline. The scene shifts to the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38), with her crew lining the deck and an upper triple turret turned to port. Two launches head toward a gangplank on her portside. A large crowd on the side lines gathered to view the event. The President, in a top hat, accompanies officials in the parade along Pennsylvania Avenue. They are seen walking past the "New Capital Hotel," at 3rd & Pennsylvania Avenue.. Military officers in parade. The parade passes shopping areas and buildings. Men wearing white hats. A U.S. four-stack destroyer flanks the Presidential Yacht, Mayflower, as it steams, carrying Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, followed by a motor launch, in New York City on Christmas Day, 1918 a month after the end of World War I. The next scene shows the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38),with ship's company lining her decks and her forward three-gun turrets turned to port. Next sequence is take from a small boat circling the Pennsylvania from bow to her port side, where two small boats are seen. In a separate scene, a motor launch pulls up to a gangplank at starboard side of the Pennsylvania. Scene shifts to the USS Texas (BB-35) steaming, followed by other battleships. Events that initiated World War I and animated map showing involvement of nations from 1914 through 1918
Opening scene shows a man being roughed up by a group of men in an alleyway. A slate comments (in French) that when nations are bellicose, an assassination can cause a world war. Next, a slate shows picture of the world and states (in English) "One murder may start a world war." Another slate (in French) states that In 1914, while Europe's armies and fleets were more powerful than they had ever been, the nephew of the Emperor of Austria (Archduke Ferdinand) was assassinated. A front page is shown of newspaper, "Journal De Geneve" carrying the story. Next scene is a view of the city of Sarajevo. The ancient Emperor's Mosque dominates the scene. A slate appears asking Where is Sarajevo? It is followed by a map of Europe in 1914, which zooms in on Austria and Serbia and identifies and labels Sarajevo,in Austria, close to the Serbian border. Slates (in French) says Austria accused Serbia of War and other nations enter the melee. Animated World map shows the nations getting involved, starting with the German Empire in 1914, including its African colonies, and then successively showing Russia, France, Belgium,Great Britain, Japan, and the Ottoman Empire. Map advances to 1915, showing the Italian empire, Bulgaria,and Central Arabia. In 1916 it adds Portugal, Roumania. Next, the U.S.A. is added in, 1917, along with Central and South America, Greece, Siam, and China. Finally, the slate shows the war ending in 1918. Slate shows Armistice Day, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th Month (November), with time shown on hands of Big Ben in London.
